Planting Kowhai Seeds

We are part of Kowhai Hub. The Kowhai is a native tree to New Zealand and is special because it grows yellow flowers that are food for our native birds.
We are learning about what plants need to grow and how to look after them.

We had pods of Kowhai seeds Mrs H found under a kowhai tree. We took the seeds out of the pods and then sanded each seed. Sanding the seed allows water to get through the hard outer shell of the seed.

We left the seeds in warm water over night and planted the next day. The seeds had doubled in size.
Toby and Isabella filling their container with seed raising mix.

Neesha making a hole in the soil for her seed (not too deep).

We filled in the hole and watered our seeds (not too much).

Kowhai seeds take a long time to grow. We have to look after our seeds very carefully. We need to take our seeds outside each day to give them sun light and air. We also need to water them each day.

I wonder when our seeds will pop up?
