Character writing

We have been learning to create a picture in the readers head by adding detail to our writing. We wrote about characters from the BFG. When reading can you get a picture in your head about what the character looks like, how they move and what they sound like?

We connected this to our reading. When we read we make a picture in our head to help us understand what we are reading. We made pictures in our head the whole time we read the BFG.

No one has ever see this person in their life. Who is it? He wears an enormous cloak with heaps of pockets. I think he was prehistoric. He is the only one who travels a lot in the world and he brings a suitcase and a trumpet with him. He has big ears the size of two elephants. His legs were long and thin legs and he could do massive leaps. He wears raggy and old shoes, a flower on his belt and he has rolled up sleeves. His face is all wrinkly. His nose is all cracked and bent. He is the BFG. "You are swizzfiggling me" he said to Sophie.
Author Thomas

Nobody has seen this man or is it a girl? Do you know? He is very very old and wrinkly. THe wrinkles are all over his head neck and face. He is as tall as a tower. He is thin like a pencil. Is he the BFG? Hmmm? He has rotten nails. When he walks his footprints are the size of me. His clothing is a black coat and raggety pants and budget shoes. His nose it pointy as. He could cut a sandwich with his nose. His favourite drink is frobscottle. "Frobscottle is the best" he said.
Author Bailey

The person or is it a person? is prehistoric and towers above ordinary life. He can hear better than us. He can hear a flap of a butterflies wing two meadows away. He has never been seen even though he is gigantic. Weirdly he is the runt of the family. Whenever he goes out he wears a long black smooth cloak and when he is at home he wears old raggity clothes and old raggity sneakers. Magical dreams is something he likes to catch. Sometimes he shares them with people. He is the only healthy one in his whole family. This man has skin pealing off his face because he is always in the burning hot sun of giant country. He says "Sophie Sophie where are you Sophie? He's gone now." Next Sophie climbs out of her hiding place to meet her friend the BFG.
Author Bella

If you had a look at this girl you'd think that she is an ordinary girl but have a close look and you will see that she has lovely blonde hair that touches her straight back. Her bright shiny black and white eyes are oval shaped with black spectacles in front of them. You still think she's an ordinary girl but listen to this, she understands giant language! How amazing is that? But also did you know she was the first human to drink frobscottle and whizzpop. This girls treats others politely except the nine nasty giants. What she wears most of the time is her white nighty which is made out of silk. She mostly walks normally like other humans. She is very curious about giants. "Where is this dark place?" she wondered.
Author Ayman
He is ancient. How old is he? Nobody knows. He is very king-size because he is taller than a tower. His footprints are as big as a seven year old child. He is very weather-beaten. He has a rotting nose and rotting teeth and his breath is stinky. He has very curly woolly dark red hair. He has squinty eyes. He wears a piece of old cloth tied around his hips. He kills the animals and uses their animal skin like giraffes and monkeys to put on as his cloth. When he is stomping with anger he swings his arms like monkeys. When he runs he looks like he is flying in the sky and is clumsy. He treats others like cold blooded dragons. Every night he will gobble at least ten children from their bed. "BFG who are you chiddling to?" he growled.

Finishing the BFG

We finished reading the BFG. What an amazing ending! Did you know the BFG actually wrote the story?
To celebrate Henrietta turning 7 and us finishing the BFG we had some delicious cake. Even the snozzcumbers on the cake tasted delicious.
A big thank you to Henrietta's mum for the gorgeous BFG cake.

Read the BFG

One of things on the can do list over the last few weeks has been to create something to convince people to read the BFG. Here are some of the creations.

Island Conquer

We are learning to solve multiplication problems and find co-ordinates.
To practise this we played a game Island Conquer.
The person who took over the most of the island won.
The co-ordinates we got told us how much of the island we got to take over. We used multiplication to work out each part of the island we had conquered.

Everyone in the Crescents maths group worked so well together.

Mya conquered Zane
Neesha only just conquered Ruby

Dream Jars

We created dream jars just like in the BFG. The BFG collects dreams and keeps Trogglehumpers (nightmares) so they don't get to children and blows Golden Phizzwizards (good dreams) into childrens bedrooms.
We created our own dreams. We chose either a Golden Phizzwizard or a Trogglehumper.

Golden Phizzwizards

Trogglehumpers
A Golden Phizzwizard
I wished that I could be champion of bmxing. My dreams came true. I got my bmx suit on. I was exhausted from the race but I never gave up. The race began with a bang. I go flying down the ramp. I went zooming up the ramp when I went zooming up the ramp I did a back flip. I landed on the big ramp and then I went down it really fast. I then crossed the finish line. I was the champion of bmxing.

A Trogglehumper
It all began when I made a candy maker. I needed a hammer, nails, a wrench and bolts. Then it was finished and it was as big as ten people and weighs like 13 elephants but it was missing a piece "Ahhhhh!" I said "It's out of control." I found a bucket of hot boiling water and it just made the invention even madder. Next I found the instructions and it told me its weakness...

Golden Phizzwizard with a bit of a Trogglehumper
It was a beautiful day when I was taking a walk on the path when suddenly I found a little bottle on the ground next to the footpath. "What is that?" I gasped. I picked up the bottle and drank a bit. Suddenly I started to shrink. My clothes disappeared and three chocolate buttons popped up. Wow, I'm a gingerbread boy. As I went a bit further down the path I found another bottle. I picked up the bottle and had a sip suddenly everything went jet black and then everything was clear. I was in...Candyland. Everything here is amde out of candy. "Yay everything is candy". next I had a look around. After that I found another gingerbread boy so I padded over to him. I told him I was new around here so he showed me around and when we got to the final place I turned around. I saw three black stripes and two red googgily eyes so I started walking as fast as I could suddenly a tiger pounced on me.

Golden Phizzwizard
Once upon a time there was a sky that was filled with clouds but special clouds. In winter it rains white and pink squishy marshmellows. In winter too it snows ice creams, any flavour that you wish for. There were gingerbread with numbers that were jelly  and had m&ms and licorice. You can eat everything. You can never get sick from eating too much. You can eat delicious treats all day.

Never Eat Soggy Weetbix

Room 8 are learning to give and follow directions. We remember the compass directions with some sayings 'Never Eat Soggy Weetix' 'Never Ever Smash Windows' and the Kidd-li-winks keep coming up with their own sayings. The sayings help us to work out where east and west are once we know where north is.

Our challenge was to work in groups to make an obstacle with compass directions that someone else could follow.

Obstacle course and directions made by Neesha, Bella, Zack and Balin
The next day we re-created our obstacle courses and tested them out one last time before we passed over our directions to another team to complete. The Kidd-li-winks worked together to read the directions and find their way around the obstacle courses. Here are Thomas, Bowen, Rana, Jerome and George completing Czar's. Isabella's, Teague's and Jacob's obstacle course.

We were also learning to work together and take turns. This video shows the boys modelling Parkvale Pride. Well done boys. Oh...and what fun you are having...giggles :)

Frobscottle

We tasted frobscottle. Frobscottle is from the BFG.
It is a fizzy drink for giants.

To learn more about frobscottle read our writing

Frobscottle is a delicious fizzy drink. If you don't know what frobscottle is its scrum-didily-umptious. If you are like giants and you are drinking frobscottle you would be farting your bottom off by now. Frobscottle is actually for giants but now it is for human beans. You know how bubbles go up? These bubbles go down. Frobscottle has sweets and cream in it. Frobscottle is a little rainbow colour. Frobscottle is sweet and jumbly. When you first see frobscottle it is fluffy.
Author Emma
Note: Humanbeings are called human beans in the BFG.

What is frobscottle?
Frobscottle is a giants fizzy drink. When you drink frobscottle some of it gets stuck in your throat. It explodes in my throat and it makes me whizzpop. It is a fizzy drink. Quickly the bubbles go down to the bottom of the bottle and smashes like glass. Frobscottle is unique because it makes you whizzpop like a rocket zooming into outer space. The frobscottle we tasted makes us burp because the upwards bubbles makes us burp. Burrrrrrp!
Author Jacob
Note: Whizzpopping is the giants word for farting.

Frobscottle is fizzy that the monstrous giants drink. It is different to human beans fizzy because instead of the bubbles going up they go down. Luckily I got to try frobscottle and it is scrum-didily-umptious. Frobscottle is pale green. Frobscottle tasted like lemonade, popping candy, cream and a hint of raspberry all mixed into one. I want to try giant frobscottle instead of human beans frobscottle because giant frobscottle is rare. I want to whizzpop because it would scare my parents and it would be cool to fly.
Author Bella

Mmmmm frobscottle is a fizzy bubbly drink. It looks like a spider. It smells like yoghart. When I tasted it my face scrunched up because the popping candy was sour but it was still scrum-didily-umptious. Frobscottle is the BFG's favourite drink in the world. When I ate the popping candy it felt like it was exploding in my mouth and the berry was crunchy. I wish that I burped and I could float around the world.
Author Bailey
Note: scrum-didily-umptious means delicious in giants language.

Kowhai Trees

We practised our colour mixing skills to paint our sky. Our challenge was to make as many different blues as we could.
The next challenge was to use a craft knife to carefully cut the cardboard. It was tricky because we couldn't cut all the way through the cardboard. After that we ripped off the top layer of cardboard to make a bumpy texture for our branches.
We practised our colour mixing to make different shades of greens and yellows for our kowhai tree.

When painting the corrugated cardboard we had to turn the paintbrush to paint all the grooves.

Making Connections to what we know

The Wonka reading group have been learning to make connections to their reading. When reading non-fiction books the children have been making connections to things they already know about the world. When we make connections it helps us to understand what we are reading.
Ayman's connections
Henrietta's connections
Neesha's connections
Mya's connections
 Zane's connections

Creativity with Stickman

Stickman is a game where you read and follow instructions. As you follow the instructions a story is created. The more creative you are when following the instructions the more creative and interesting the story. Here is the link to play http://www.drawastickman.com

Here are some snap shots of my adventure.

Enjoy creating!
